Basic 1st Aid

Don’t just wonder what to do if anything happens learns the knowledge and skills to make a difference to someone’s life.

Duration: 1 Day course dealing with 1st Aid Emergencies


  • Resuscitation - Adult, Child & Baby
  • Respiratory emergencies - Choking, Asthma
  • Bones and Joints - Fractures, Sprains, Dislocations
  • Other Emergencies - Burns, Diabetes, Epilepsy

Occupational 1st Aid QQI Level 5

Duration: 24 hours delivered over 3 days OR over 8 days (3 hours per day)
Certification: FETAC LEVEL 5
Credit Value: 1 credit

This module is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge, practical skills and understanding requires to provide and coordinate 1st Aid in the workplace in Compliance with the requirements of the Safety Health Welfare at Work (general Application) Regulations 2007. Preferred entry level – QQI Level 4 certificate or Leaving certificate and / or life or work experience

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • Understand the responsibilities of the Occupational 1st Aider
  • Be able to provide treatment for the purpose of preserving life or minimising the consequences of injury until discharge or the arrival of medical asistance
  • Be able to provide treatment in the workplace for an injury which does not require the attention of a medical practitioner or nurse
  • Be capable of coordinating 1st aid arrangements in the worplace
  • Be familiar with health and safety legislation on 1st aid provision in the workplace

Occupational First Aid Course Content:

  • UnUnit 1 1st Aid in the Workplace
  • UnUnit 2 Patient Assessment
  • UnUnit 3 Respiratory Emergencies
  • UnUnit 4 Cardiac First Response
  • UnUnit 5 Wounds and Bleeding
  • UnUnit 6 Altered Levels of Consciousness
  • UnUnit 7 Musculoskeletal Injuries
  • UnUnit 8 Burns and Scalds, Chemicals, Poison, Electric Shock

On completion of the course, attendees' knowledge and skills will be examined by an examiner registered with the OFAAA. If successful, attendees will receive a FETAC Occupational First Aid Certificate.

Course Validation
All of Healthcare Training Solutions 1st Aid Instructors and 1st Aid examiners are on the OFAAA Register of 1st Aid Trainers.

Occupational 1st Aid Refresher

Duration: 1 Day

Who should attend?

  • As required by The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007):
  • Anyone qualified as an Occupational 1st Aider whose certificate is in date and not FETAC Level 5 accredited
  • Anyone qualified as a FETAC Level 5 Occupational 1st Aider must attend a 1 Day Occupational 1st Aid Refresher Course every two years
  • This course includes Cardiac 1st Responder training in automated external defibrillators (AEDs) as per PHECC standard and administering aspirin for heart attack patients. This program is delivered as 1 day course by Certified Occupational 1st Aid Instructor from the OFAAA register.
